| Some general game comments
|
Our games were picked by the show's creators. We picked these games as universally appealing, relatively easy to learn, and easy for everyone to play. We also tried to pick games that dealt with different athletic and strategic aspects. In these games, we also wanted to include a large element of teamwork and communication skills. All our games are regulated by two experience officials, who referee every game from start to finish. Also, our teams are divided into the red and black teams.

Beach volleyball
|
Locale: Clearwater beach, near Tampa, FL
Episode:Episode 1
Description: The first sport played on MVP will be beach volleyball. Beach volleyball will be used as an introductory sport to our program. Beach volleyball was chosen as a sport because it is easy to learn, the rules are not complicated, and you don't have to be overly athletic to play the sport. This will be a simple 4 on 4 volleyball; our 16 members will be divided into groups of 4. The games will last 15 minutes, and there will be 2 games played.
Specifics: The game will be played up to 15 points or 15 minutes, whichever comes first. Points can only be won by the serving team, and once the serving team loses a point, they give possession to the opposing team. Rotation of the four team members occurs whenever they gain possession. Markers and nets are standard size for beach volleyball. Because of the short games, we will speed up the process by having multiple balls on site, having a 10 second limit for serves, and having 2 3-minute breaks.

Soccer
|
Locale:Field in front of Simmons Hall
Episode:Episode 2
Description:The second sport our competitors will do is soccer. As soccer is a global sport, and pretty easy to learn, we choose to make this our second game because it fit the learning curve the competitors are going through. In addition, the sport presents a different set of skills because players are not allowed to use their hands. The teams are four on four, with small goals and one goalie. The games will last 15 minutes each, and again only two games will be played. The standard field size will be reduced to one half of the standard field.
Specifics:The soccer field that will be used will be much smaller than a regular soccer field. The dimensions of the field wil be (). Cones will map off the corners of the field, and two small soccer goals will be placed in the center of the backlines. The two goalies will be allowed to touch the ball in a ten feet by 10 feet box in front of the goal. The goalies are allowed to exit the box but cannot touch the ball outside of it. Offsides rules will not apply. Free kicks, corner kicks, and throw-ins will apply. On penalties, the team that was "fouled" will recieve a free kick from the spot of the foul. There will be no penalty kicks.

Flag Football
|
Locale:Field in front of Simmons Hall
Episode:Episode 3
Description:Football is by far the most complicated sport our competitors will play during the six weeks. With a variety of rules, formations, and plays, they will have a lot to memorize and execute during the game. In addition, because football requires a lot of players, the sixteen people willbe divided into only two teams; everyone will play for 30 minutes. There will be one 5 minute break between two halves. Another sport that has its own distinct flavor, football has the potential to bring out the best or the worse in our athletes. Judgement, execution and teamwork are keys in this game.
Specifics:The basic football field will retain its characteristics, but it will be reduced in size to a forty yard by 20 yard field. There are a required set of four basic positions on offense: three linemen and one quarterback. The rest of the players become either tight ends, wide recievers, or running backs. The three down linemen are not eligile to catch the ball, but their job is to block for the other players. The quarterback is snapped the ball from the center(one of the linemen), and he distributes it in order to score. On defense, only two down linemen are required; others can blitz at any time.

Ultimate Frisbee
|
Locale: Field in front of Simmons Hall
Episode:Episode 4
Description: Ultimate Frisbee is the second to last sport played by the players. After football, this sport is placed to here to bring down the complexity level. In effect, it gives players a break from the more strategic sports of football and soccer. In this sport, a person's dexterity and precision are tested by the inclusion of a freesbee as the primary object in play. In addition, players still have to run and communicate amongst each other. Ultimate freesbee is not as mainsteam a sport as some of our other games, but it still enjoys a large following among athletes.
Specifics:Ultimate Frisbee will be played on the same field that the soccer games were played on. The game consists in advancing a frisbee across a field by throwing it until it reaches the endzone or changes possession. There will be two endzones, one for each team. Getting the frisbee into the endzone counts as one point. Whenever the frisbee touches the ground or goes out of bounds, the team who had possession last loses possession and the other team gets the frisbee at that spot. A person who has possession of the frisbee is alloted a "bubble" of four feet, in where they are allowed to have space to pivot and throw. A person with possession of the frisbee cannot advance using his/her feet but must throw the frisbee to another person. The thrower has 10 sconds to throw the frisbee, or the team forfeits possession. People without a frisbee are allowed free movement.

Basketball
|
Locale:Athletics Center
Episode:Episode 5
Description:Basketball is one of the most versatile sports among the five that have been selected. The committee felt that the sport was simple enough but yet had a ton of room for strategy and creativity. That is why we made basketball the last sport; after this week the finalist list will be pared to six. Basketball is also one of the most popular sports in America, no matter which area of the country you go to. This is the final chance for competitors to make a good impression on the voters. The members will be split into four four-people teams; teamwork will be imperative for some on the bubble to pass. This week promises to be one of the most exciting, with several people competing for a place among the final six.
Specifics: The game will be played in a half-court setting. There will be two games; each will last 15 minutes or until 12 points. Points will be awarded as one for a field goal, but two points for making a shot beyond the two-point line. Fouls will be monitored and called by the referees; after a foul, the player who was fouled will be allowed to take one foul shot. All standard basketball rules will be enforece by the referees. All possessions must start at the half court circle, and the defending team must return the ball beyond the two-point line whenever it gets a rebound. Shoots made after a foul will be awarded, and no foul shots will be taken.
